Looking after our teeth is a daily task that we all sometimes fall down on. There are plenty of practical and
easy steps you can take to make sure your teeth are always protected. The good news is that all the small steps add
up to one big effort that will enable you to keep smiling for many years to come.
The most basic thing you should be doing is brushing your teeth twice a day. It shouldn't just be a quick once
round with the toothbrush either. A couple of minutes should be enough to ensure your teeth are properly
cleaned.
In addition to this you need to floss every time you brush as well. No matter how thoroughly you brush you will
never be able to get rid of all the tiny bits of food that build up in between your teeth. Flossing can do this and
it will give you a much nicer smile too.
It also pays to check your teeth for any obvious signs of decay or problems every now and then. You don't need
to check every day if you brush regularly but every week will enable you to spot any potential problems that might
crop up. For example watch for the start of any cavities or a grey area on a tooth which could mean a cavity has
formed that you cannot see. For example if a tooth decays from the side where it meets with another tooth you won't
be able to see the hole.
Try keeping chewing gum on you at all times as well. Saliva helps to dilute and get rid of excess acid in your
mouth, so if you have eaten a meal or consumed some fruit you can just chew some gum afterwards to bring things
back into balance again.
Another good tip is to check your toothbrush and
clean it thoroughly after every use. You should always change it after three months but if it looks like it
needs changing before that then do so. Use good toothpaste which has fluoride in it as well, because this
helps to strengthen the enamel on your teeth.
Of course home care is just one small part of taking good care of your teeth. You should also see a dentist for
a regular check up every six months. If you discover a problem in between visits you should make sure you see them
sooner to find out if anything needs to be done. Typically speaking regular visits should reduce the need for
extensive treatment at any stage.
